The seven-legged “grandmother” that marks the countdown until Easter, week by week (with a special closing on April 1)
In Vilafranca de Bonany, Lent is lived with a tradition that is very easy to understand (and very beautiful to see): the Jaia
Corema has seven legs, and every week one is removed in the square while the people sing the traditional song.
It is like a live “calendar” that progresses until Easter, with a family and community atmosphere.
The Jaia Corema is usually represented with symbols of Lent (simple food and vegetables) and a serious expression: it is the calm transition after Carnival.
✅ Why go
Short and authentic plan: you come on a Saturday, see the moment in the square and take the opportunity to have a snack or drink around the town. Furthermore, it is a very Mallorcan tradition and different from the typical fairs/markets.
❌ To keep in mind
The event is brief and the square fills up. If you want to see it well (especially if you go with little ones), arrive with a little margin.
